This exhibition introduced audiences to the work of early modern painter-etchers of Irish birth or heritage. These artists made a significant contribution to the so-called Etching Revival of the 1880s, earning the recognition of their peers and contemporary art critics. Key works by Robert Goff, Edward Millington Synge, Percy Gethin, Roderic O'Conor, William Booth Pearsall, Estella Solomons, and Stella Steyn were included. The etchings of Irish artists were shown alongside examples by Whistler, Séguin and other Etching Revival printmakers who had a direct influence on their work. An illustrated catalogue presents new research on this all-but-forgotten aspect of Irish art, addressing the motivations and challenges faced by Irish printmakers within the context of the Etching Revival and contemporary Irish art. The exhibition featured material from the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane, the National Library of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and Crawford Art Gallery, Cork as well as prints from the British Museum and the University of Glasgow: The Hunterian.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525/30–1569) is best known today for his paintings of peasant life, yet it was through his exceptional graphic work that he achieved widespread fame during his lifetime. Starting out as a print designer for publisher Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel produced numerous print series that depicted demons, virtuous souls, fools and beleaguered peasants tilling the soil. Often Bruegel produced what one early observer called ‘fantasies and bizarre things, dreams and imaginations’ that were closely based on the work of Hieronymus Bosch and inspired his contemporaries to call him the second Bosch. Published as part of the Bruegel anniversary year celebrations, this luxurious book accompanies the exhibition at the Royal Library of Belgium, Brussels, which is renowned as a pioneer in Bruegel scholarship and holds an unparalleled collection of the artist’s graphic work. Essays by a distinguished group of Bruegel scholars open the book. They discuss the Royal Library of Belgium’s collection of Bruegel prints; the results of the Fingerprint research project; Bruegel as draughtsman and printmaker; Bruegel’s editions, in particular his collaboration with Hieronymus Cock; and the posthumous survival of his art. The essays are followed by 80 reproductions of his drawings, all published at the size of the original works. --Thames and Hudson

"Edvard Munch (1863-1944) is best known today as a painter, but his reputation was in fact established through his prints, which were central to his creative process. His printmaking was experimental and innovative, and he continually revisited the subjects of his paintings in striking prints, in which he evoked a wide range of emotion and mood through the use of varied techniques. Munch's early life in the industrial town of Kristiania (renamed Oslo in 1925) was marked by sickness and poverty. His first works centred on the expression of deep emotional experiences, specifically the deaths of his mother and teenage sister when he was growing up, as well as passionate yet unhappy love affairs of which his deeply religious father disapproved. Encouraged by his encounters with a Bohemian society of artists, writers and poets, he developed a visual landscape that was a radical deviation from the slick society portraits and grand Scandinavian landscapes then so much in vogue. His efforts attracted considerable attention and much criticism, and he practised with little financial success as a painter for ten years before he started to gain his reputation as a profoundly innovative printmaker. Written by a team of acknowledged experts, and with an interview by writer Karl Ove Knausgaard, this book will shed new light on the production of some of Munch's most remarkable works." --

The catalogue brings all the graphic works of Günter Brus: from the early spirit duplicates for announcements concerning the Direct Art Festival (1967), via the silkscreens of the 1970s, the cyclical etchings of the 1980s and 1990s, up to the large body of works of the 2000s. The dry points, in particular, reflect continuation of his actionist working methods: the injuring of the metal surface, the restless working to the point of exhaustion, the intensity of the gestural handwriting. With works from five decades, the book offers a retrospective of his work and a display of the artist's development from actionist to picture poet, as reflected in the graphic works. --Publisher's website.
